picture yourself as a young man, driven by curiosity and the youthfull fascination of sound and rhythm............
As a teenager Serafin loved nothing more than to spend his free time with his father’s cassette recorder, saving home recorded disco sounds, mainly those from French and Italian radio shows, to magnetic tape.
What seems ingenious too some is rather disturbing for his parents, especially when the young boy who grew up in Soleure starts to cut up the recorded sounds and splice them together again to create new songs.
What nowadays can be done with a small box packed with wires and circuits, was all done with crafty fingers, multiple recorders and the forebearance of a young mans ears.
One day his younger brother turned up with two pitchable recordpalyers and a mixer, the wear and tear of magnetic tape abruptly stops. From now on one mixes and serves on plates that run at least at 33 rpm. From craftwerk to grandmaster flash, one works and mixes, buys and trys.
Soon Serafin’s face is known at the local record stores. After a short while his musical wish list leads him to the vinyl dealers from the big cities.
In this instance curiostity does not kill the cat. But earn him milk.
His musical and mixing talents are recognized by local dj’s and club owners.
One is not surprised to learn that at the age of 19 Serafin has all ready played one of the most important house clubs in Switzerland the “New York” in Neuchatel, together with Djaimin & Mr Mike.
However Philippe Egger wouldn’t be a Serafin, if he wasn’t working on several projects simultaneously.
Working discreetly in the background, but always with his own style, he organizes several events and parties in his new city of choice, the small party capital of switzerland, Zurich. Such as a regular clubnight at “The Relm”, the legendary "Parfüm" nights or the long and well planned musical journeys to “Cosmic Chile”.
The guest lists of these events still read as a who`s who of the international technoscene: Zip, Ricardo Villalobos, Akufen, Steve Bug, Koze, Egoexpress, Closer Musik, Brinkmann, Aril Brikha, Isolée, Luciano, Mathew Herbert, Baby Ford, Mathew Johnson, Soul Capsule, Daniel Bell, Pantytec...
Not only was serafin honing his dj skills, but also following his deepest musical interests. How can one arrange sounds into such beautifull structures?
With what does one create so soothing medative loops?
In 2002 the first vinyl and cd releases where born. With the release of “Kristall EP” on Bruchstuecke Serafin`s name becomes well known and receives alot of praise from the minimal community. (de:bug 11/04 – record of the month) This success continues with ep’s such as “Funk Excursion” with Luciano, “Starship Discotheque” on Liebe*Detail and the remixes of Lawrence and Wandler (together with Cosili),
'GROOVE' – people’s choice awards 2005 (No17: best track, No18: best international dj, No20: best remix).
Serafin is also a co-owner of the most welcoming recordstores in Zurich, "P45". Its the name of the record-livingroom-store, voted as one of the best 15 by the readers of “de:bug”.
Serafin has earned himself a place in the international dj scene. he will remain the charismatic and likeable dj and man that he is.
the music he creates as a dj and as a producer is deep and groovy, moving and absorbing. The best way to get to know and enjoy serafin is to listen to him in his own world behind the decks. |
